Reflections on the Irish Ocean Literacy Network Regional Meeting
On 7 November, Suzie Cahn, iCommunity’s Programmes Director, attended and chaired a panel at the Irish Ocean Literacy Network (IOLN) Regional Meeting in Belfast. The event, centred on Cross-Border Collaboration for Ocean Literacy, offered a strong example of how all-island cooperation can support more effective environmental and community outcomes — a core focus of the iCommunity collaboration between the Wheel and NICVA over the last 3 years.
The keynote address by Dr Emma McKinley (Cardiff University) highlighted the expanding scope of ocean literacy, now understood to include cultural connection, identity, access and community participation alongside scientific knowledge. This broader understanding aligns closely with the approaches of many in the community and voluntary sector. The morning panel emphasised the need for coordinated cross-border policy, particularly in the context of post-Brexit regulatory divergence. Contributors underscored the value of shared data, joint ecological management and inclusive consultation processes across jurisdictions.
In the afternoon, Suzie chaired the Ocean Literacy in Action panel, which showcased a range of practical initiatives from across the island. Including the Shifting Tides project, Suzie has led over the last 2 years, funded through Creative Ireland’s Climate Action programme.
The panel included augmented-reality heritage trails, beach-based education, research on marine identity, sustainable aquaculture practices, and community-focused marine science engagement. Each example demonstrated how accessible, place-based initiatives can deepen public understanding of the marine environment and strengthen community participation.
The event provided a clear illustration of the potential of all-island collaboration and echoed what such work brings including: shared learning, community engagement and practical cross-border cooperation.
